Downtown San Diego Hotels
The downtown area of San Diego has been the center of commerce and activity in California since the Spanish settled the area in 1769. In that year, father Junipero Serra founded what was the first of 21 missions in "Alta" or Upper California.
Downtown San Diego has been, ever since the statehood of California, the main commercial and legislative part of the county. Most of the newer business additions to the city have relocated closer to their workers, who are living in the surrounding suburbs and villages that make up San Diego, but there is still a large group that call the downtown area home. It is also one of the hottest attractions around, with a host of small villages making up the heart and soul of the area. These villages offer some of the finest shopping, lodging and dining to be found anywhere in the city, bringing together young and old from around the country and the world to America’s Finest City.
The main attraction in the downtown area is three small villages that reside within the confines of the area. The historic Gaslamp quarter, Little Italy and East Village all have different feels about them, the Gaslamp with its plethora of restaurants and nightclubs, Little Italy with its old world Italian charm and the East Village with its artists lofts and galleries makes a well rounded and complete urban experience. There are a few companies that run tours of the area, bringing out the history and historical buildings in the city, as well as some of the little known facts that have made San Diego famous over the last 100 or so years.
